Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are the most violent explosions in the universe, releasing an energy equivalent to a few percent of the entire energy in our sun within a few seconds. When they occur, they outshine the entire gamma-ray sky. While being studied extensively since the 1990’s, their origin remains a mystery.
Gravitational waves, ripples in space-time itself have been predicted by Einstein as part of his theory of general relativity, over a 100 years ago. It took nearly a 100 years until they were first detected in 2015. Since then, 6 events were recorded.
A major event took place in August 2017, with the first confirmed detection of a GRB associated with the gravitational wave (GW) signal that results from the merger of binary neutron star system. This provides the first "smoking gun" for the origin of (part of) gamma-ray bursts. Close investigation of this event showed evidence for the production of heavy elements (heavier than Iron), thereby completing the answer of the long standing problem of heavy element production.
